Boil Order in effect beginning November 9, 2011

A boil order has been called for users of the Brighton Water Co. after a power outage took down pumps on Wednesday morning.

Officer manager Betty Roberts said the back-up generator did not kick in after the brief outage, which caused a pressure drop and a decision by water officials to call the boil order.

The outage was at the Godfrey pump station on Humbert Road, she said.

The boil order is in effect until further notice, Roberts said.

Southwestern High School Homecoming

The Southwestern High School homecoming football game is scheduled for Saturday October 1, 2011.  The school is trying to bring back spirit and community pride by having annual homecoming parades.  The village of Brighton has the prestige of being the host of the parade this year!   The parade is scheduled for Friday, September 30 at 5:00pm.  It will start at Betsy Ann Park and end at Schneider Park with a bonfire celebration.

The Village of Brighton Economic Committee would like to encourage the businesses in  Brighton, especially those along the parade route,  to support the Southwestern High School Piasa Birds  by decorating their businesses in the school colors of green and gold.   To encourage this involvement Mayor Schafer will be choosing a business that shows the most school spirit in their decorations and awarding them with a certificate for a free business registration ($50 value) and, of course, bragging rights!  Showing your school spirit demonstrates your pride and commitment to our community.  Your community commitment can bring in new patrons to your business from the Southwestern area and beyond.

All citizens of Brighton are encouraged to show school spirit by decorating with streamers, balloons, green & gold lights, green & gold porch lights, etc.  Use your imagination!  School spirit yard  signs can be ordered at A & B Custom Vinyl & Graphics.

Go Birds!

Village of Brighton Yard Waste Collection Center

The Village of Brighton Yard Waste Collection Center will be back in business by September 23, though in a new location and with a different setup.  The new site is right next to the old one, and will be open on Monday and Friday from 11 am to 3 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm.  The site will be closed during inclement weather, and winter hours may be different.  An attendant will be on duty during hours of operation, and signs will be posted.

The new site will be behind a locked fence and gate, except during hours of operation, in an attempt to avoid the unsightly, and unhealthy, mess that was created at the last site.  There will be two dumpsters at the new site—one for yard waste and one for other household detritus.  We have also designated a section of the new site for large limbs and wood that can then be given to households in Brighton with wood-burning stoves or fireplaces.

The new site and setup do not come free.  For that reason, we have established fees for dumping.  Residents of Brighton, who are the ones who pay the taxes to support this project, will not be charged a fee for dumping yard waste.  Those who live outside the Village of Brighton city limits will be charged $20.00 for a truckload of yard waste, or $5.00 for a trunk full.

The second dumpster will be used for disposal of large household items, such as furniture and appliances—the kinds of things that our residents previously disposed of at Spring Clean-up Days.  There will be a $5.00 fee for single large items, such as furniture, and a $20.00 fee for a truckload of junk, both for residents and nonresidents.
